Preparation for a Bone Densitometry (DXA)

A DXA scan is a quick and painless exam of the lower back and hip bones using an extremely low dose x-ray. Each exam takes approximately 15 minutes.  For your comfort and accuracy of the exam, please regard the following suggestions and regulations:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Remove all body jewelry from the breast to thigh area.  Jewelry such as watches or metal in areas other than the breast to thigh are not a concern.  Items containing metals may adversely affect the accuracy of the scans.
  • Ideally, clothing should be loose fitting with no zippers, belts, metallic or shell buttons
