CT imaging is one of the most efficient ways to evaluate the Chest, Abdomen, and Pelvis because it provides the ability to see all types of tissue in a cross sectional view. It's often the preferred method for diagnosing many types of cancer, evaluating tumor size, and extent of disease. It is also used to evaluate non-specific pain and/or kidney stones.
Many times it is necassary to use an oral contrast agent when scanning the abdomen and/or pelvis. The contrast allows our radiologists to visualize the bowel more clearly for possible obstructions and inflammatory diseases. IV iodinated contrast media is often necassary for an accurate evaluation of the arteries and veins. The need for oral and/or IV contrast is determined by the body part being scanned and the reason for the exam.
